Help them learn categories of items. For example, when eating or getting dressed, pick a category, like shoes. Name the different types: "sandals!" "boots!" "sneakers!"

Let your child control the book, even if it is upside down.

Add to what your toddler says. If they say “banana,” you can say, “Do you want a banana? That’s a very healthy fruit.”

After asking a question, silently count to ten to give them plenty of time to respond.

Respond to what your child says. If they say “truck,” you can say, “We saw a truck today.”

Ask "how", "what," and "why" questions about what they are watching on TV.

Ask open-ended questions about things they see, such as “Where do you think all those birds are flying?”

Ask open-ended questions. Instead of "Did you like the park?", ask "What was the funniest thing that happened at the park today?"

Ask open-ended questions about animals around them, such as “When do you think the raccoon will sleep if he is up all night?”

Talk about the letters in their name. Say each letter name and sound.

Expand their vocabulary by using interesting words. For example, you can say “enormous” instead of “big.”

Let your child play with books. Try making a tower and knocking it down.

If you read books about animals, make the animal sounds.

Collect scraps of different fabrics, like lace, corduroy, and silk. Rub them gently on the baby's hand or foot and use descriptive words like "soft," "bumpy," or "scratchy."

Build a blanket fort and "read" inside with a flashlight.

Use bath toys and ask, "Will this sink or float?" Use the words "sink" and "float" repeatedly.

Play homemade letter games with children. Write individual letters on cards, turn them face down, and have children search for matches. Encourage children to say the letter of each card they turn over.

Sort laundry by color. Say the color name for each item, give it to them, and let them put it in the correct pile.

Put letter magnets on the refrigerator and use them to name nonsense words, then sound them out together.

Play with compound words. Ask, "What word do we have if we take 'cake' away from 'pancake'?" or "What happens if we put 'cow' and 'boy' together?"

Play the "Yes-No Game." Ask silly questions like, "Is the sky purple?" or "Is the cat pink?" to build comprehension.

Respond to the child’s prompting to read.

Read the same book repeatedly — repetition builds recognition and confidence.

You don't even have to read. You can just talk about the pictures.

Ask “where’s the…?” and let the child point to pictures in the book.

Move your finger from left to right as you read so they see that we read in a specific direction.

Before you read a page, ask them to find something tiny in the illustration. For example, "Can you find the little yellow bird hiding in the tree?"

Show your child that words are everywhere: on storefronts, magazines, and cereal boxes.

Visit the library and let your child choose books that interest them.

Pick a letter of the day and look for it everywhere.

Point out letters on signs, such as stop signs, restaurant signs, or grocery store signs.

Put letter magnets on the refrigerator, point to one each day, and say the letter name and letter sound.

Ask your child to "read" a favorite book to you or their stuffed animals by looking at the pictures and remembering the story.

Write children’s names. This will have special meaning for them and is often the first letter they remember and recognize.

Before reading the text in a new book, look at only the pictures together and have your child tell you what they think is happening.

Pause and ask open-ended questions about the book you are reading, such as “What do you think will happen next in this story?”

Your baby loves to hear your singing voice, even if you think you can't sing!

Clap to the rhythm while you sing the words in the book.

Try the "Ants Go Marching" nursery rhyme to help language and counting development.

Sing songs while doing everyday activities like making dinner and taking a bath. Just make up a song about what you are doing.

Try the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" nursery rhyme to help language development.

It's good to sing the same song again and again. It can make your baby feel comforted.

Sing the letters in your child's name. Sing, "there's a happy little boy named Paul, P-A-U-L, Paul is his name."

Sing the A-B-C song, nursery rhymes, funny songs, or any songs you like.

Try the Wheels On The Bus nursery rhyme to help language development.

Fill a plastic bottle with dry rice or beans. Shake it while you sing to help them physically "feel" the beat and the syllables in words.

Sing part of a familiar song very slowly. Slowing down helps them hear the distinct sounds in each word.
